‎NFF Dismisses Chelle’s Post-Playoff Departure

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has refuted claims that Super Eagles Manager, Eric Chelle, will resign from his position following the 2026 World Cup African playoff scheduled for next month in Morocco.

‎Gusau, the NFF chief, emphasizes that the Franco-Malian coach is integral to Nigeria’s long-term strategy beyond the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs.

‎The Super Eagles secured a spot in the CAF play-off round by finishing as one of the top runners-up in the qualifiers, and they will compete against Gabon in November for a chance to enter the inter-continental play-offs.

‎As the pressure intensifies ahead of these crucial matches, Gusau sought to clarify Chelle’s role and address initial concerns regarding his appointment.

‎“He has a two-year contract with us, so no one should assume he is only here to assist for the World Cup. His agreement encompasses the World Cup qualifying matches as well as the AFCON.

‎“We have successfully navigated the first hurdle, and now we advance to the play-offs in November. Following that, we will prepare for the Nations Cup and monitor how events unfold.

‎“Many Nigerians questioned our decision to appoint him, but thankfully, he has demonstrated his ability to lead the national team effectively.

‎“Our duty now is to provide him with all the necessary support to fulfill his responsibilities and achieve the results that the country anticipates.”

‎Chelle has stabilized Nigeria’s campaign with a strong finish in the qualifying group, including crucial victories that propelled the team into the play-offs.

‎The NFF has consistently highlighted the importance of continuity and stability as it aims for a return to the World Cup after its absence from Qatar 2022.

‎Nigeria will commence training in early November before traveling to Morocco for the match against Gabon, with a potential encounter against either Cameroon or DR Congo looming in the final.

‎Gusau has called on fans to remain united in support of the team, stating that the federation is collaborating closely with government authorities to ensure the best possible outcomes.
