The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced plans to begin monthly psychiatric evaluations for prison inmates across the country, starting in November 2025.
The Vice President of the NMA, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, in Abuja. The visit also featured the donation of reusable sanitary pads to all female inmates nationwide, supported by Diatom Impact/Platform Capital.

Dr. Olowojebutu said the initiative aims to ensure inmates receive consistent mental health care and psychological support as part of broader rehabilitation efforts.
“We realised that many inmates require mental health tools and regular evaluation to aid their reintegration into society,” he stated. He added that the donation of sanitary pads would promote hygiene, dignity, and well-being among female inmates.
He commended the NCoS for its cooperation and reaffirmed the NMA’s commitment to sustaining the partnership. “Together with our partners, we will continue to improve the lives of inmates and ensure they are not forgotten,” he said.
In his remarks, Mr. Nwakuche praised the NMA for its sustained humanitarian efforts and lauded Diatom Impact/Platform Capital for its ongoing support, including building a digital skills centre at Kuje Correctional Centre.
Also speaking, Dr. Akintoye Akindele, Chairman of Diatom Impact/Platform Capital, said supporting inmates was a moral duty. “Prisoners are human beings first. They deserve dignity, hope, and rehabilitation opportunities,” he said.
