Extortion Crisis: Motorcyclists Seek Relief in Gokana

The extortion of commercial motorcyclists at checkpoints is a self-destructive practice that’s crippling the very individuals it’s supposed to protect. By squeezing them dry, security operatives risk withering away the roots that sustain the livelihoods of these riders. The commercial motorcycle association in Gokana, Ogoni, recently took a peaceful protest against this menace, protesting at the palace to discuss with HRM Solomon Ndigbara. They lamented that the alleged extortion has intensified, with demands increasing from ₦100 to ₦500, severely impacting their earnings.

While security measures are crucial, extortion undermines trust, cripples livelihoods, and tarnishes the very purpose of these checkpoints. There should be a fair and transparent system that ensures safety without suffocating the people it’s meant to protect. The extortion of motorcyclists by checkpoint personnel is a pervasive issue that has severe consequences for riders, their families, and the broader community.

These daily extortions strip motorcyclists of their hard-earned income, making it difficult for them to provide for their families and meet their basic needs. This financial strain can lead to poverty, hunger, and a reduced quality of life. The constant fear of harassment and extortion discourages many motorcyclists from operating their businesses efficiently, leading to reduced productivity and income. This can stifle economic growth and development in the community as it heavily relies on motorcycle transportation.

The extortion of motorcyclists by checkpoint police officers is often accompanied by harassment, intimidation and physical abuse when they are not given what they want. This has led to a breakdown in trust between law enforcement and the “Okada riders”, creating a sense of insecurity and mistrust. The extortion of motorcyclists and commercial drivers by checkpoint personnel in Rivers State is a pressing issue that warrants immediate attention.

The impact of such extortion extends beyond individual riders, affecting the broader community by increasing transportation costs and reducing economic opportunities. Authorities must address these issues by ensuring that checkpoints serve their purpose of enhancing security without becoming a burden on the people they are meant to protect. Effective oversight, accountability, and community engagement are essential in preventing abuse and fostering a safer, more just environment for all.

The King’s commitment to resolving the extortion issue after the protest yesterday, through dialogue with security agencies and local leaders, is a positive step. To build on this, the Rivers State government should implement stringent regulations to prevent extortion and prioritize the safety of commercial drivers statewide.
