Food Security Boost: Eleme Farmers Seek partnership

In a bid to boost food sufficiency and ensure a fruitful future, the Oneensi Eleme Farmers Cooperative visited the Council Secretariat, seeking a strategic partnership with the local government. By tending to the earth with sustainable practices, they aim to sow seeds of resilience that reap a harvest of prosperity. Yesterday, the group’s president, Mr. Moses Gomba, appealed for support in acquiring 20 hectares of farmland and 10,000 poultry birds to scale up egg and meat production, ultimately making food more accessible to low-income families and meeting community needs.

This initiative seeks to increase food availability, promote sustainable agriculture, and nurture nature’s bounty for generations to come, and has the potential to increase food availability and make fresh produce more accessible to low-income families, thereby mitigating the impact of inflation and high food costs.

Nigeria’s food security situation is precarious, with rising food prices exacerbating the challenge. The food inflation rate increased to 35.41% in January 2024, up from 33.93% in December 2023. This surge has made it difficult for households to afford basic necessities, with many struggling to put food on the table. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, food prices rose by 31% in September 2023, driven by increases in prices of staples like yam, fish, meat, and cereals.

Rivers State, a major agricultural hub, is not immune to these challenges. Despite its potential for agricultural production, the state faces issues like environmental degradation, crude oil spillage, and insecurity, which compromise food security. A study found that a single crude oil spill can reduce household food security by up to 60%. Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration had also initiated efforts to revitalize agriculture, including revamping the Songhai Integrated Farms project and supporting the 45,000-metric-tonnes Rivers Cassava Processing Company. These initiatives aim to boost food production, create jobs, and improve food security.

The partnership between the Oneensi Eleme Farmers Cooperative and the local government can greatly improve food security in Rivers State. By acquiring 20 hectares of farmland, the cooperative can boost local food production, making fresh produce more accessible to the community, especially low-income families. This initiative can help stabilize food prices, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth in the state. With the government supporting local farmers and promoting agricultural development, Rivers State residents can expect a steady supply of nutritious food, ultimately enhancing their well-being.

Chief Obarilomate Ollor, the Eleme local government chairman, has promised to support the farmers, and his commitment should be honored. The government should provide the necessary resources to help the farmers’ cooperative succeed. By working together, the government and farmers can build a more resilient food system, improve food security, and enhance the livelihoods of Rivers State residents.
