WAEC Debunks Rumours of Restricting WASSCE Subject Choices

WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied widespread reports claiming that it has mandated or restricted the subject choices for senior secondary students sitting for the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates (SC) 2026.

Moyosola Adeshina, the Acting Head of Public Affairs for WAEC, distanced the examination body from the misinformation in a statement on Tuesday.

“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” Adeshina stated, seeking to reassure the public and participating schools.

The Council stressed that it does not possess the authority to unilaterally determine or alter the subjects students must offer. WAEC clarified that the development and regulation of curricula in Nigeria is solely the responsibility of the Federal Government.

As an examination body, WAEC’s operational role is strictly to implement government policies through assessment.

“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government,” Adeshina emphasised, reinforcing the clear separation of roles.

“WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country.”

The clarification was necessitated by the need to quell anxiety and confusion among students, parents, and school administrators preparing for the 2026 examination cycle.

The Council confirmed that all current and prospective candidates retain the standard choices as permitted by the national curriculum structure.

WAEC assured all stakeholders of its continued commitment to professionalism and excellence, guaranteeing that every candidate participating in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2026, will have a fair opportunity for assessment based on established governmental guidelines.

To prevent further confusion, the Council advised all schools, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard the misleading reports currently circulating.

It urged them to rely exclusively on official communications released directly by the Council for accurate and authenticated information regarding all examination guidelines and policies for WASSCE (SC) 2026.
