In Nigeria, the relentless bloodshed has become a painful reality, where innocent lives are tragically cut short like candles in a tempest. The land yearns for peace, but the deafening echoes of gunfire and anguished wails of the bereaved overshadow the faint whispers of hope, plunging the nation into profound sorrow.
Amidst this chaos, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly objected to the presidency’s statement, which they claim misrepresents their stance on the unpleasant killings of Christians on Tuesday, October 21st.
CAN firmly asserts that the unending “brutal attacks” on Christians constitute mass murder, demanding justice that has long been overdue. This clarification follows a visit from President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, who reportedly distorted the facts, further exaggerating the situation.

This evident disregard for accuracy raises serious concerns about his motives and the presidency’s commitment to transparency. One can’t help but wonder: Could this be an intentional attempt to misinterpret the narrative, mislead the public, and divert attention from the real issues at hand?

The killing of Christians in Northern Nigeria has reached alarming proportions, with stark statistics highlighting the severity of the situation. According to a report by the Observatory of Religious Freedom in Africa, between October 2019 and September 2023, over 55,910 people were killed, and 21,621 abducted in Nigeria, with Christians disproportionately affected. Specifically, at least 16,769 Christians were killed, compared to 6,235 Muslims.
The report also notes that Christians are 6.5 times more likely to be killed and 5.1 times more likely to be abducted than other groups in the affected regions. In 2024, 3,100 Christians were killed, and 2,830 kidnapped, earning Nigeria the dubious distinction of being the deadliest country for Christians globally.
The killings seem targeted, with Fulani herdsmen and Islamist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP specifically attacking Christian farming communities. In 2025 alone, over 7,000 Christians were killed, and 7,800 abducted. This targeted violence has led to the displacement of millions of Christians, with many forced to flee their homes and livelihoods.
These are facts, however, not the bone of contention. Rather than fixating on whether or not there’s a Christian genocide, as claimed by Bwala’s assertions on Arise TV Tuesday, the government should prioritize ending the bloodshed.
The real issue at hand is the incessant attacks by bandits that have led to loss of lives, both Christian and Muslim. The government needs to shift focus towards finding concrete solutions to put an end to these senseless killings and ensure the safety of all citizens.
A functional early warning system to anticipate and respond to attacks, particularly in vulnerable areas, should be established. This can be achieved through community-led initiatives, leveraging local intelligence, and enhancing security infrastructure.
The government should also prioritize security sector reform, ensuring that security personnel are adequately trained, equipped, and held accountable for their actions. This includes addressing issues of corruption, bias, and impunity that may exacerbate the violence.
Furthermore, humanitarian assistance should be provided to victims and their families, including medical care, psychosocial support, and economic empowerment programs, to alleviate suffering and support the rebuilding of communities. A sustained commitment to these efforts is necessary to bring an end to the violence and create a more secure and peaceful future for all Nigerians.
