Army Arrests Gunrunner, Seizes Weapons Cache in Rivers

Troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, have arrested a suspected arms trafficker and recovered a cache of firearms in a sting operation in Rivers State.

The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, disclosed this on Monday while parading the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Peter Onyeali Chibueze, from Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, at the Division’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

He said the arrest followed credible intelligence that led troops to intercept the suspect on September 19, 2025, while he attempted to retrieve a cache of weapons hidden inside a sack of clothing materials.

Recovered items included 15 Italian-made automatic pump-action rifles allegedly meant for sale to criminal groups operating across the Niger Delta. Lt. Col. Danjuma described the operation as a major breakthrough in efforts to curb the circulation of illegal arms and dismantle organised criminal networks in the region.

He recalled that earlier in September, troops uncovered another arms trafficking ring, recovering two English pistols, four locally fabricated pistols, and a double-barrelled gun, revealing a network spanning Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa States.

According to him, investigations are ongoing to arrest other members of the syndicate.

Lt. Col. Danjuma reaffirmed the commitment of the General Officer Commanding 6 Division and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force, South South, Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, to sustaining operations that ensure peace and security in the Niger Delta.
