MTV to End Its Iconic Music Channel Era After Nearly 40 Years of Broadcasting

MTV, the pioneering 24-hour music television network that transformed global pop culture, is preparing to pull the plug on its music channels in the UK after almost four decades on air. Reports indicate that five of its long-running UK channels — MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live — will officially go off air on December 31.

The move underscores the seismic shift in how audiences now consume music. With the rise of YouTube, TikTok, and other social media platforms, traditional music television has seen a steep decline in viewership. Although Paramount, MTV’s parent company, has yet to release an official statement, the closures align with a broader strategy to streamline operations globally.

Launched in 1981 in the United States, MTV redefined music entertainment by introducing audiences to a new visual era where artists’ videos were hosted by charismatic “video jockeys” or VJs. The channel became synonymous with pop culture, airing unforgettable moments such as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” premiere, the 1985 Live Aid concert, and the birth of the MTV Video Music Awards.

MTV’s expansion into Europe began in 1987, with the UK version launching in 1997, debuting with Three Lions by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner. Over the years, it launched the careers of notable presenters like Cat Deeley, Zane Lowe, and Emma Willis, while transitioning later into hit reality shows such as Ex On The Beach and Teen Mom UK.

Reports also suggest that MTV music channels in Australia, Poland, France, and Brazil will face similar shutdowns as Paramount undertakes global cost-cutting measures estimated to save around $500 million (£376 million). Earlier in 2025, the company had already shuttered Paramount Television Studios, known for producing Jack Ryan and The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Despite waning numbers, MTV’s UK music networks maintained a loyal viewership base, with MTV Music drawing 1.3 million viewers and MTV 90s attracting 949,000 as recently as July, according to Barb data.

While the curtain closes on its linear TV presence, MTV will continue to live on through social media and Paramount+, keeping its legacy of music, pop culture, and entertainment alive for the digital generation.
