Bayelsa Health Ministry, WHO Train Workers on Emergency Response, Mpox Preparedness

The Bayelsa State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has conducted a three-day capacity-building workshop for frontline emergency health workers, focusing on improving emergency response systems and preparedness against Mpox (Monkeypox) and other disease outbreaks.

‎Media Assistant to the Commissioner for Health Bayelsa State, Mr Doubara Fafi, revealed in a statement on Saturday, October 11, 2025, that the workshop, held at the Bayelsa Health Insurance Scheme (BHIS) House in Yenagoa, brought together key healthcare stakeholders, including medical directors, ambulance personnel, and representatives from six accredited hospitals across the state.

Speaking on behalf of the Health Commissioner, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, the Chairman of the State Treatment Committee, Dr. E.T. Omu, emphasized the importance of strengthening emergency health systems.

He said the training was critical in equipping frontline health workers to manage acute medical emergencies and outbreaks more effectively.

“Emergency response is a vital tool for safeguarding the lives of the critically ill and injured. This training reflects our commitment to building a responsive and resilient healthcare system in Bayelsa.”

Also present at the event were Dr. Williams Appah, Secretary of the State Primary Health Care Board; Dr. Agedah, Executive Secretary of BHIS; State WHO Coordinator, Dr. Oluwadare Marcus; Dr. Malcom Brisibe; Director of Emergency Response, Dr. Ebikapaye Okoyen; and other senior health officials and stakeholders.

Dr. Oluwadare Marcus commended the proactive steps of the state government, highlighting that investing in emergency response training is essential for effective outbreak control.

“Training healthcare workers is key to strengthening the health system’s capacity to respond to Monkeypox and other public health threats. It not only protects communities but is also vital for national and global health security,” he said.

Brisibe, in a message of appreciation to the participants, urged them to remain committed to supporting government efforts in improving healthcare delivery. He encouraged health workers to continue sensitizing parents and caregivers to promote better health outcomes across the state.

He assured that training programs on emergency response and public health education would continue periodically to keep communities safe and informed.

The workshop also featured a cultural display and drama presentation, which emphasized the importance of emergency preparedness and public awareness in disease prevention and control.
