Police Suspend Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has suspended the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Thursday, said the suspension followed a meeting between the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe.

He said the meeting, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, focused on issues surrounding the police enforcement of the 1991 Act.

Hundeyin noted that while there is no explicit court order halting the enforcement, the decision to suspend operations was made “out of consideration for the interest of Nigerians, and regard for the Nigerian Bar Association.”

He added that the suspension will remain in effect until the outcome of the hearing of the Motion on Notice scheduled for October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.

Hundeyin noted that the deliberations between the Police and the NBA also aimed at fostering synergy between the two bodies in upholding the rule of law and boosting public confidence.

He said to further solidify this collaboration, a joint Police-NBA committee has been inaugurated.

In light of the temporary reprieve, Hundeyin stated that the police have advised all vehicle owners and motorists to use this period to regularise their documentation and ensure they fully comply with all relevant laws governing the use of shaded or tinted glasses in Nigeria.

According to him, Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to enforcing all extant laws with transparency, fairness, and respect for citizens’ rights, while maintaining effective collaboration with critical stakeholders in the administration of justice.
