Eze Ihunwo Urges NAWOJ Rivers to Prioritize Empowerment for the Less Privileged

His Royal Highness, Eze Emeka Ihunwo, Nyenwe-Eli and Paramount Ruler of Woji Community, has urged the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State Chapter, to channel more of its activities toward empowerment programmes for the less privileged and vulnerable in society.

Eze Ihunwo made the call when the Rivers NAWOJ Chairperson, Susan Serekara-Nwikhana, led her members on a courtesy visit to his palace in Woji recently. The visit was to seek royal blessings and partnership ahead of the association’s forthcoming NAWOJ National Summit.

The traditional ruler, who commended the association’s commitment to promoting women’s development and social justice, advised that greater attention be given to initiatives that would directly impact the lives of the poor and unemployed.

“We are all aware of the hardship in the land. When organizing programmes, it is important to think about how they can empower the less privileged.

“There is hunger everywhere. Imagine using such resources to buy bags of rice and share with motherless babies’ homes and needy families that would go a long way to reduce hardship.

“You have identified with us today, and we will also partner with you to touch lives. Journalism is vital to the society, and we will continue to support you in your activities,” Eze Ihunwo said.

He also pledged the support of the Woji Traditional Council to NAWOJ in its drive to achieve the goals of the forthcoming national summit and other developmental programmes.

Earlier, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Rivers, Susan Serekara-Nwikhana, thanked the royal father for his consistent support for women and community development.

She explained that Rivers State had been selected by the national leadership of NAWOJ to host a three-day national summit, which will bring together over 200 participants from across the 37 states of the federation.

According to her, the event will coincide with the International Day of the Girl Child in October and will provide a platform to discuss issues affecting women and girls, with a view to finding lasting solutions.

“We are proud of your contributions to humanity and your efforts in empowering women. That is why we have come to seek your support and partnership to ensure a successful hosting of the national summit,” she said.

Mrs. Serekara-Nwikhana also presented a copy of the summit’s budget to the monarch, expressing hope for his continued assistance and encouragement.
