NULGE Launches 7-Day Strike Over Dismissal of 300 Members in Rivers

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has declared a seven-day warning strike across Rivers State in protest against the dismissal of 300 staff members by the Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Dr Chidi Lloyd.

The strike action, announced in a letter signed recently by the State Secretary of NULGE, Sunday Adeniran, was directed to all state officers and chairmen of the union’s chapters across the 23 local government areas.

The letter followed a meeting of the union’s State Executive Council (SEC) on September 29, 2025, where it was resolved that workers must withdraw their services for one week as a mark of solidarity.

According to Adeniran, the decision was taken in response to what the union described as a callous and unfair action by the Emohua council boss, accusing him of arbitrarily terminating the appointments of union members and withholding their salaries.

“Effective from midnight of September 30, 2025, all local government employees across Rivers State are hereby directed to withdraw their services until further notice,” the letter read. “This action has become necessary in view of the unjust treatment of our members in Emohua LGA.”

The union urged members to ensure strict compliance with the directive, stressing that the strike was essential to defend the rights of workers and protect job security in the state’s local government system.

The strike is expected to paralyse operations across all 23 LGAs in Rivers State for the next seven days, unless a resolution is reached.
