Nigeria @ 65: FG Cancels Independence Day Parade

The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade earlier scheduled to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

‎The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

‎Although no reason was provided for the cancellation, the statement emphasized that the decision does not diminish the importance of the anniversary. Instead, the government reaffirmed its commitment to marking the milestone with dignity and enthusiasm.

‎“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, 1st October,” the statement read in part. “The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”

‎The OSGF further clarified that all other activities lined up for the commemoration under the theme “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation” will proceed as planned.

‎While expressing regret for any inconvenience the development may cause, the Federal Government appealed to Nigerians, the diplomatic community, and invited guests for understanding. It also urged citizens to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda aimed at repositioning the country.

‎“The Federal Government appreciates the understanding, support and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests, and urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in making Nigeria a greater nation,” the statement added.

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to mark the 65th anniversary.
