Obio/Akpor Council Chairman Meets Workers, Pledges Improved Welfare

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Dr. Gift Worlu, in a bid to improve staff morale held a strategic meeting with members of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on Wednesday at the Council Secretariat, Rumuodomaya.

Dr. Worlu who expressed gratitude to God for his victory at the polls, thanked the staff of the Local Government for their support during his political journey, noting that many of them, being both residents and indigenes of Obio/Akpor, stood by him during the elections.

“I stand here this morning full of gratitude and happiness to God Almighty and to you, my good people of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. Many of you live and work in Obio/Akpor, and many of you are indigenes. I believe that after listening to my campaign promises, you voted for me to become your Chairman.”

While declaring his aspiration to be the best Council Chairman, Dr Worlu explained that his decision to meet with the workers came after the resolution of leadership transition issues within NULGE, adding that he values workers’ contributions to the success of any administration.

“I recognise the fact that there is nothing all of us can do without you. I recognise the fact that I am one of you, a unionist myself. Obio/Akpor Local Government is not new to me, as I once served as Supervisory Councillor for Works and Transport, and later became Caretaker Chairman in 2007. Again, in 2015, I served as Caretaker Chairman. Some people I met then are still here, and some of you I even employed. I know that I will go to higher places with you,” he said.

He assured staff that his administration would focus on improving their welfare and working conditions, citing his track record of ensuring prompt payment of salaries during his past tenure.

The Chairman pledged that his administration would involve staff in Council activities, committees, and projects, to ensure they gain experience and contribute meaningfully to governance.

While acknowledging the request for a 13th month salary Dr. Worlu explained that the Council’s current finances cannot accommodate it.

The Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA), Mr Sunny Nyeche Adibe, commended the Chairman for his worker-friendly approach, noting that his leadership style has already created a harmonious working environment.
