Power Retirees Seek 25-Year Pension Arrears

Retired workers from Nigeria’s former National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) and Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), including many from Rivers State, are urging the federal government to release pension benefits unpaid for over 25 years.

These arrears, linked to the power sector’s restructuring in the early 2000s, have left retirees across Nigeria, including those in Port Harcourt, grappling with financial hardship after decades of service to the nation’s electricity infrastructure.

On September 18, 2025, the Concerned NEPA/PHCN Pensioners Pressure Group held a press conference in Lagos, with Rivers State retirees actively participating. Led by chairman Oladimeji Dunmoye, the group displayed placards reading “Pay Our Dues” and “Justice for Pensioners,” sharing stories of struggle.

For Rivers-based retirees, the delays have compounded challenges in a region already facing economic pressures, making it difficult to afford essentials like healthcare.

The issue began with the 2005 privatization of PHCN, which succeeded NEPA. The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has failed to disburse funds despite budget allocations since 2017.

Dunmoye highlighted that seven letters sent to PTAD between 2020 and 2025, including submissions from Rivers State members, went unanswered despite evidence of available funds. “Our patience is exhausted,” he stated.

The group has appealed to the presidency three times from 2021 to 2025, with no progress. Dunmoye accused PTAD of mismanagement, noting that some retirees, including those in Rivers, have passed away waiting. Coordinator Julius Ayodeji emphasized the betrayal felt by workers who powered Nigeria’s grid. “We deserve better,” he said.

The pensioners, including Rivers representatives, plan to petition the Ministry of Finance and National Pension Commission in late September 2025, demanding full arrears and consistent payments. As Nigeria’s pension system faces scrutiny, these retirees seek urgent action to honor their contributions, warning of protests if ignored.
