Rivers State to Become Model of Good Governance in Nigeria – Ibas

Rivers State Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, says his administration has stabilised the state under extraordinary circumstances, laying a foundation on which Rivers people must now build to make the state a model of good governance in Nigeria.

Retired Vice Admiral Ibas speaking during a public lecture themed “Democracy and Good Governance,” organised by the state government as part of the transition process in the state at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Port Harcourt on Tuesday 16-09-25 admonished all Rivers people to recommit themselves to tolerance, reconciliation, and the collective destiny of the state.

The Sole Administrator recalled the recent thanksgiving service held at the Ecumenical Centre to appreciate God for the peace and safety enjoyed in the state over the past six months, described the public lecture as an affirmation that democracy must deliver and that governance must always be rooted in service.

While reflecting on his core mandate upon assumption of office on March 18, 2025 to restore peace and stability amid insecurity, political impasse, and breakdown of trust, Retired Vice Admiral Ibas lauded Rivers people for their support and cooperation.

In his remarks, Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibibia Worika, described the event as a defining moment in the state’s history, marking the conclusion of six months of emergency rule and the transition to democratic governance.

Professor Worika emphasised that the theme of the lecture was timely, offering an opportunity to reflect on past lessons, reaffirm a collective commitment to democracy, and chart a course where government becomes an instrument for the welfare and progress of all Rivers people.

The Guest Speaker Professor Abiodun Amuda-Kannike underscored the need for inclusivity, empowerment, and sustainable policies to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.

Prof. Amuda-Kannike urged leaders to go beyond monetary handouts to genuinely empower citizens, especially women and youths, and to foster a culture of dialogue, respect, and forgiveness as tools for peacebuilding.

He also advised Rivers people to rise above division, hatred, and fear in order to embrace dialogue, respect, unity, forgiveness, harmony, and progress in order for the state to shine again as an example for other states across Nigeria.
