FG Inaugurates Committee for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government, FG, has established an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) tasked with planning and executing all approved programs for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

The announcement was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume on his X page on Thursday. He emphasised the importance of national unity and patriotism in the commemorative celebrations.

During the inauguration, Akume highlighted the anniversary’s significance as a moment for reflection and a call to action. “This anniversary is a reminder of where we are coming from and where we are going from here,” he stated.

“As a nation, we have faced challenges in areas such as political, economic and social issues but have overcome them. An anniversary is not just a celebration of the past. It is a call for action for the future.” He urged all citizens to contribute to building a nation where everyone feels valued and empowered.

The 65th Independence Anniversary celebration is set to begin with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

On Friday, 26 September 2025, there’ll be a Juma’at service and activities for women. On Saturday, 27 September, youth activities will be held alongside a Historical Arts Exhibition.

A church service is planned for Sunday, 28 September. This will be followed by a public lecture on Monday, 29 September.

The programme will conclude on Wednesday, 1 October 2025, with a presidential broadcast and the 65th Independence Day Parade. In a related development, he also unveiled the “Nigeria @65 Compendium Project” workstation.

This initiative, a collaboration between CherryAfrica Magazine and the SGF’s Office, features a state-of-the-art studio for a TV series that will interview top government officials on their contributions to nation-building under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Akume was the first to be interviewed, during which he encouraged Nigerians to acknowledge the nation’s 65 years of achievements and to maintain confidence in their leaders.

The compendium is designed to be a comprehensive record of Nigeria’s historical milestones and development trajectory, spanning the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial eras.

It will cover various key sectors, including the economy, the three tiers of government, and the Renewed Hope Agenda, serving as a repository of national progress.
