NOA Calls for Collective Action to Prevent Suicide, End Stigma

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to break the silence and stigma surrounding suicide, stressing that the growing mental health challenge requires urgent collective action.

Speaking in Dutse on Wednesday during activities marking the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), the Jigawa State Director of NOA, Mr. Ahmad Tijjani, said suicide remains preventable if society embraces compassion, dialogue, and professional support systems.

World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10, seeks to raise awareness on suicidal behaviours, promote global commitment to prevention, and highlight the importance of mental health advocacy.

Tijjani noted that more than 720,000 people lose their lives to suicide every year across the globe, leaving behind grieving families and devastated communities. He emphasized that awareness campaigns are vital in changing narratives, dispelling myths, and encouraging timely interventions.

“Suicide is preventable, and together we can change the narrative, break harmful myths, and end the stigma. We must encourage open and compassionate dialogue,” he said.

The director advised Nigerians to cultivate the habit of checking in on family, friends, and neighbours, noting that “sometimes a simple question can save a life.” He also appealed for patience, empathy, and non-judgmental listening when interacting with those who may be struggling.

Tijjani encouraged people in distress to seek help from doctors, counsellors, or dedicated hotlines while urging communities to share information on available support services.

“Use words that heal. Your kindness and care can bring hope. World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembrance but also about hope. Every life matters, and together we can prevent suicide,” he added.
