Human rights activist and Publisher Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the Department of State Services (DSS) for reportedly writing to social media company X (formerly Twitter) to demand the deactivation of his account over a post critical of President Bola Tinubu.
The DSS, in a letter addressed to the platform, claimed that Sowore’s August post was targeted at President Tinubu and could incite unrest. The post read: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”
According to the agency, the remark attracted “widespread condemnation” and posed a risk of inciting Nigerians into “unwholesome activities.” It added that the tweet undermined the President’s reputation before the international community.
Reacting on Sunday, September 7, Sowore described the move as “a national disgrace,” accusing the Tinubu administration of using state institutions to silence dissent. He wrote on his handle: “The drowning Tinubu regime exports national disgrace to Twitter, again. @OfficialDSSNG joins the fray after Nigeria Police failure.”

Sowore further alleged that the DSS had sponsored protests calling for his arrest and had continued a pattern of harassment against him since the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations. He cited instances where the Nigeria Immigration Service placed him on a no-entry list, his passport was seized by court order, and police officers allegedly assaulted and rearrested him.
He also dismissed what he described as false claims in court that he was involved in terrorism financing, calling it “a shameless pretext” to justify state persecution.
“To now export this disgrace to Twitter in the US shows how far Nigeria has sunk into the hands of its most incompetent citizens,” Sowore declared, vowing to continue his activism “with or without a Twitter account, with or without Facebook, and whether I am in jail or outside.”
