Customs Generate ₦859bn, Seize ₦200bn Contraband in Port Harcourt

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Port Harcourt Area II Command, Onne, Rivers State, has announced that it generated a total of ₦859 billion in revenue and intercepted contraband worth ₦200 billion between May 2024 and July 2025.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Theophilus Duniya, revealed this in a statement released recently which highlighted the performance of Muhammad Babandede, who served as Customs Area Controller during the period under review.

According to the breakdown, the command recorded consistent monthly revenue collections, beginning with ₦47.4bn in May 2024 and rising steadily to ₦57.5bn in July 2025.

Other notable monthly collections included ₦62.8bn in July 2024, ₦64.6bn in October 2024, and ₦66.7bn in March 2025.

Beyond revenue collection, the command also intensified its crackdown on illegal imports.

Within the 15 months, officers seized a wide range of contraband, including 544 assorted rifles, 112,500 rounds of ammunition, over 75 million tablets of tramadol, 14 million bottles of codeine-based syrup, and more than 50 million tablets of other dangerous and expired medicines.

These items carried a duty-paid value of over ₦200 billion.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, commended Babandede and his team for their diligence and professionalism in tackling smuggling and safeguarding national security.

He described the seizures as a significant victory against criminal trade networks that undermine Nigeria’s economy and public health.

“The Onne Customs, under Babandede’s leadership, beat smugglers at their own game. Their dedication to duty and commitment to the fight against contraband are commendable,” Adeniyi said.

The development comes shortly after Babandede was promoted to Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, following approval by the Nigeria Customs Service Board at its 63rd regular meeting.
