FG: Space Technology A Pact to Drive Innovation and Security

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that space exploration and technology are central to Nigeria’s economic growth, security, and capacity to tackle global challenges.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 27, by Dr. Felix Ale, Director of Media and Corporate Communications at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).

According to the statement, President Bola Tinubu underscored the importance of space science during his official visit to Brazil, where Nigeria signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the South American nation to strengthen cooperation in the field.

The agreement was endorsed by Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, and Brazil’s Science Minister, Luciana Santos, in the presence of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Nnaji described the accord as a “shared vision,” stressing that space technology provides Africa and Latin America with the means to leap into the future economy. He noted that under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Nigeria plans to harness satellites, rocketry, and data-driven innovation to stimulate inclusive development.

Key areas of collaboration include joint satellite missions for agriculture, climate change monitoring, and national security, as well as joint research in space vehicle engineering, manpower training, and technology transfer. Artificial intelligence will also be deployed for forest protection in both the Amazon and the Nigeria–Cameroon basins, while Earth observation tools will be applied to strengthen disaster management and food security.

Minister Santos described the initiative as a move toward solutions with global relevance, while President Lula da Silva called the partnership “a bridge of innovation and solidarity” linking two major nations of the Global South.
