Education, Sensitization Key to Proper Waste Management – RIWAMA MD

RIWAMA BOSS

The Managing Director of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Dr. Ibimina Wokoma, has stressed that education and sensitization are critical to achieving effective waste management in the state.

Dr. Wokoma stated this during a follow-up inspection of the Rumuosi dump site and other refuse disposal points within the Port Harcourt metropolis on August 26. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling challenges associated with waste disposal.

“Education and sensitization are key aspects of refuse management, especially in our clime where many people are not accustomed to managing their wastes properly. Waste management starts from the home by bagging wastes properly and disposing of them only at government-approved receptacles.

“It is unbelievable and unacceptable that some residents dump wastes on road medians. This practice is forbidden and highly prohibited,” he said.

The RIWAMA boss explained that part of the inspection was to ensure unhindered access to dump sites, noting that the untarred road leading to Rumuosi posed a challenge.

He declared an emergency on waste management in Rivers State and disclosed that new measures were underway to improve refuse collection methods and curb sharp practices, with stiff penalties awaiting defaulters in line with the agency’s laws.

Dr. Wokoma commended service providers for attaining over 80 percent success in refuse clearance but urged those yet to clear their designated sites to expedite action.
