The Rivers State Police Command says it is investigating the alleged assault of a police officer by community youths in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) who were allegedly tagged to be consuming hard drugs.

Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, in a report shared to the press on Sunday, explained that Inspector Joshua Nyian, attached to Woji Division, reported the incident on 24 August 2025.

“According to the report, at about 10:20 a.m. on the same date, while returning from work, the officer stopped at Nkpolu to see his woman friend, who is pregnant for him,” the spokesperson said.

“He was suddenly accosted by the Nkpolu Youth President, the Community Chairman, and about twenty youths. They allegedly assaulted him by beating him up, dragged him to the main road, seized his police identity card and phone, recorded him on video, and forcefully collected the sum of seventy-eight thousand naira (N78,000) from him. “

He also claimed that the youth leader had been making advances toward the woman, which he suspects led to the attack.

Police said the officer’s statement has been documented and a medical form issued for his treatment.

The command noted that efforts are underway to bring in the youth president and others mentioned in the case. It also cautioned community leaders against allowing young people to take the law into their hands, assuring that justice will be pursued.
