Tinubu Arrives in Brazil to Deepen Bilateral Relations

President Bola Tinubu arrived in Brasília, Brazil on Monday to commence a state visit aimed at strengthening long-standing diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Brazil.

Flying in from Los Angeles, United States, the President was received by senior Brazilian government officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte and Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete.

Upon his arrival, Tinubu was also greeted by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, and a delegation of Nigerian ministers and government officials who would participate in a series of bilateral talks and memorandum of understanding (MoU) signings.

The visit’s official welcome ceremony, complete with full military honours, is scheduled to take place at the Planalto Palace.

Following the ceremony, Tinubu will engage in a private meeting with the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, which will be followed by expanded bilateral meetings involving senior officials from both nations. The leaders will also oversee the signing of MoUs and hold a joint press conference.

Tinubu’s itinerary includes meetings with key Brazilian legislative and judicial leaders, such as the President of the Brazilian Senate, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, and the President of the Supreme Federal Court.

He is also set to participate in the Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum to foster economic cooperation. Nigeria and Brazil have a history of cordial diplomatic relations dating back to the 1960s.

Brazil was the only Latin American country to attend Nigeria’s independence celebrations in 1960. The ties between the two nations have been particularly active since President Tinubu’s inauguration.

This marks his third visit to the South American country since taking office, following his attendance at the G20 Summit in November 2024 and the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in July 2025.

Recent high-level engagements have included a visit by Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin to Nigeria for the Second Session of the Mechanism for Strategic Dialogue.

This dialogue, established in 2013, aims to promote cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, trade, energy, and defence. The most recent session resulted in the signing of seven MoUs on June 25, 2025.

The collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil is critical for Nigeria’s development goals, particularly in food security.

A notable example is the $2.5 billion investment by JBS to boost local food production and create jobs, which was signed during a previous visit.

The $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme, an agricultural mechanisation project, is also underway, aimed at supplying tractors and farm equipment to Nigeria.
