Iwobi Assist Earns Fulham Draw Against Man United

In a Premier League match at Craven Cottage, Fulham and Manchester United played to a 1-1 draw, with Nigerian internationals Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey experiencing contrasting fortunes on the pitch.

While both Super Eagles players completed the full 90 minutes for Fulham, their individual contributions to the game’s narrative were quite different.

For Bassey, who was deployed in an unfamiliar left-back position, the afternoon began with a moment of high tension.

In the 38th minute, the defender was penalised after a VAR review showed him fouling Manchester United’s Mason Mount inside the box during a corner kick.

However, Bassey was let off the hook when Bruno Fernandes, the United captain, missed the resulting penalty, sending his shot over the crossbar.

Manchester United eventually took the lead in a peculiar turn of events in the 58th minute.

A header from Leny Yoro from a corner kick accidentally deflected off Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz and into his own net, a bizarre own goal that put the visitors ahead.

Fulham mounted a comeback, and it was Iwobi who was instrumental in securing a point for his team.

Playing a central midfield role, the Nigerian playmaker delivered a precise cross from the left side of the field in the 73rd minute.

Substitute Emile Smith Rowe connected with the pass, striking the ball past the goalkeeper to level the score.

The assist was a significant achievement for Iwobi, marking his 40th in the Premier League.

This milestone further solidified his position as the most prolific Nigerian player for assists in the competition’s history, extending his lead over fellow countrymen such as Nwankwo Kanu (29 assists) and Yakubu Aiyegbeni (26), Kelechi Iheanacho (25) and Shola Ameobi (20).

The draw means Fulham has now earned two points from their first two matches, placing them 13th in the league table.

For Manchester United, the result leaves them with just one point from their first two games, putting them under early pressure as they sit in 16th place.
