ADC Gains Momentum in Lagos as PDP, LP, Members Affirm Membership

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) gained traction in Lagos State, as prominent stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), along with other Lagos residents, formally joined the party at a recent affirmation ceremony.

The event, which took place on Saturday, was attended by various political figures and members of the public, signifying a growing coalition within the state’s political landscape.

During his address at the ceremony, a former Minister of Interior and the party’s Interim National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, invoked the words of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo to contextualise the current political climate.

He referenced Awolowo’s 1983 speech, which spoke of a “synthesis” emerging from the confrontation between a political “thesis” and “antithesis.”

Drawing a parallel to the Hegelian dialectic, Aregbesola stated that the existing political order is facing an inevitable challenge from its opposition, which will ultimately lead to the formation of a new political synthesis.

Aregbesola highlighted the pressing issues facing Nigerians, including widespread insecurity, the high cost of living, and exorbitant medical expenses.

He described a nation where citizens live in fear and many are unable to afford basic necessities, including life-saving medication.

He noted that a government that fails to prioritise the welfare of its people is destined to lose its relevance and eventually collapse.

“There is a limit to how much the people can be squeezed and pushed before something eventually gives,” he warned.

The former minister underscored the urgency of the ADC’s mission, presenting the party as a necessary vehicle for the people to access political power and bring about change.

He expressed optimism, noting the “enthusiasm of politicians and citizens across divides and from all walks of life” who are joining the ADC.

The former governor of Osun State emphasised that a political party’s primary role is to serve as a platform for public good, and any party that deviates from this sacred duty will face severe consequences.

The ceremony marks a significant step for the ADC in Lagos State as it seeks to position itself as a viable alternative for voters ahead of future elections.
