Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle said he didn’t take the job as Nigeria’s national team manager because he wanted money, even though he was making a lot more in his old job.
Chelle was hired as the Super Eagles coach in January after leaving his two-year contract with the Algerian club, MC Oran, to take on the Nigerian role.
It is reported that Chelle earns $50,000 each month as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
Seven months into his role, Chelle has managed two competitive games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with one win and one draw.
His recent performance with the Eagles B team has led to some questions about his position, but Chelle is well aware of the situation around his appointment.
“I have heard a lot of rumors that they want to fire me and replace me with someone else. I know about that,” Chelle said to a Nigerian journalist based in the UK, Osasu Obayiuwana, during an interview at the 2024 CHAN tournament in Tanzania.
“I understand that I could be fired after just one match. This is how things work in football. However, if they decide to do that, they have to be prepared to pay me for the rest of my contract.”

“When I came to Nigeria, it wasn’t for the money. I was making more in my previous job. I came here because this is a respected team, and I want to show what I can do and achieve something. I came here for the challenge. My motivation is still the same.”
“He hasn’t had much contact with the NFF president and the general secretary since taking over the team.
We met initially and a few times after that, but for the most part, I have been working on my own as I carry out my duties.”
Chelle’s goal to lead Nigeria to the 2026 World Cup continues in September, when the team plays against Rwanda in Uyo and South Africa in Bloemfontein.
The qualifying campaign will end in October, followed by the 2025 AFCON in Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026.

He shouldn’t have been given Eagles B to coach. That was an error.
