Defence Chief Advises Nigerians to Acquire Self-Protection Skills

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has called on every Nigerian to learn basic self-defence skills as a crucial measure for personal safety in the current security climate.

Musa said this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday night, monitored by The Port City News.

He stressed that mastering such abilities is as important as other essential life skills like driving or swimming.

Musa argued that acquiring self-defence capabilities is a fundamental requirement for navigating a world he characterised as increasingly perilous, where individuals with malicious intent pose a constant threat.

He urged citizens to develop a greater awareness of their surroundings and the capacity to protect themselves and their loved ones.

He believes that security is a shared responsibility, not one that falls exclusively on the government, and requires the active involvement of the populace.

Furthermore, the Defence Chief recommended that institutions like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) be reformed to provide comprehensive training in these areas.

He expressed concern that the current three-week program is inadequate and fails to fully equip young graduates.

He suggested that the NYSC curriculum should be expanded to include mandatory training in unarmed combat, swimming, and driving, which he sees as vital skills for preparing young Nigerians for the challenges of a volatile world.

In his remarks, Musa also emphasised the importance of a cooperative approach to national security.

He encouraged Nigerians to be more vigilant and to report any suspicious individuals or activities within their communities.

His statements underscored the gravity of the security situation in the country and represent a shift towards empowering citizens with the necessary skills and awareness to safeguard themselves.
