The need for mothers to prioritize intensive breastfeeding of their babies from zero to two years and above to ensure proper growth has been advocated.
Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, Rivers state, Professor Van Oriji said this at the 2025 breastfeeding week event.
Professor Oriji, who gave the keynote lecture emphasized the importance of Breastfeeding to both newborns and lactating mothers stating the nutritional and health benefits of the process.
In the same vein, a medical practitioner and also the assistant coordinator Baby friendly Hospital initiative committee, UPTH, Dr Gracia Eke described the event as globally celebrated to create more awareness on issues relating to breastfeeding.

Two lactating mothers, Mrs Emehobong Ehwon and Mrs Nora Mba, while expressing satisfaction over the added knowledge acquired, applauded the organizers of the event and encouraged other mothers to follow suit as there are lots of benefits in practitsing exclusive breastfeeding. Highlights of the event were goodwill messages and presentation of post-natal materials from the Nutrition society of Nigeria.
This year’s breastfeeding week has as it’s theme, Prioritize Breastfeeding, Create Sustainable Support Systems”.
