Rivers NAWOJ Condemns Abuse of Minor in Church

NAWOJ

The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has condemned the degrading treatment of minors captured in a viral video allegedly recorded in a church in Port Harcourt.

In a statement signed by NAWOJ chairperson, Comrade Susan Serekara-Nwikhana, and the secretary, Comrade Precious Ahiakwo-Ovie, on Thursday, NAWOJ described the incident as “barbaric, inhumane, and a flagrant violation of children’s rights,” stressing that no religious doctrine can justify such acts.

The Association also questioned the judgment of the children’s parents, expressing concern that some mothers appeared to have willingly subjected their wards to the abuse instead of shielding them from harm.

While commending the Rivers State Police Command for promptly arresting the presiding pastor, identified as Ifediorah Joseph, along with others implicated in the case, NAWOJ urged investigators to ensure a swift and thorough prosecution to guarantee justice for the victims.

“Children deserve love, care, and dignity — not cruelty masquerading as spirituality,” the statement read. “We call on religious leaders, community heads, civil society groups, and all stakeholders to join forces in safeguarding the rights of our children.”

The Association reiterated its commitment to defending the rights and welfare of women and children. It advocated continuous public sensitisation on the dangers of child abuse, urging the public to report such cases to the appropriate authorities promptly.
