Biometric Systems Are Key to Recapturing Escaped Inmates – Tunji-Ojo

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, credits a new digital biometric system for the improved rate of recapturing inmates who escape from correctional facilities. He challenged claims of seven jailbreaks since 2023, stating the number is actually lower.

He pointed out that many of Nigeria’s 246 correctional centres are over a century old, with at least a dozen currently under renovation.

The minister acknowledged that escapes had happened previously, but insisted the current administration has a better handle on the situation.

He mentioned that a jailbreak in Suleja, Niger state, occurred when a fence collapsed, which highlighted the outdated nature of their record-keeping and biometric systems.

“The key isn’t just preventing escapes, but ensuring that when they do occur, we have the means to quickly get them back,” he stated.

Tunji-Ojo also referred to a flood in Maiduguri that overran a correctional centre, causing a disaster that was not the government’s fault.

He highlighted a recent incident in Nasarawa where 16 inmates escaped. He thanked the digital biometric records and better coordination with security agencies for quickly apprehending seven. He expressed hope that the remaining nine would be recaptured soon.

In addition to security improvements, Tunji-Ojo said that medical services in prisons have been enhanced, with the hiring of 50 doctors, 100 nurses, and the deployment of NYSC doctors.

The minister explained that prison management is now on the concurrent legislative list, allowing both federal and state governments to manage the facilities.

He noted that about 72% of inmates are state offenders, with 67% still awaiting trial, and the federal government currently covers most of their maintenance costs.

He said the current administration doesn’t make excuses and is focused on producing results.

He praised President Bola Tinubu for providing resources to improve facilities and systems, making them more secure.
