CSO Offers Free Legal Services To Lady Banned By Ibom Air

Comfort Emmason

The Network for the Actualisation of Social Growth and Viable Development, a prominent civil society organization, has issued a strong call for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the treatment of Comfort Emmanson by Ibom Air and relevant regulatory authorities. In a detailed statement released on Monday, Omoniyi Akingunola, the organization’s Head of Office, denounced the handling of Emmanson’s case as deeply unfair, unjust, and wholly unacceptable. The group has also extended an offer to provide pro bono legal assistance to Emmanson, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring justice and fairness in the matter.

Widely circulated videos on social media platforms have depicted Emmanson in a heated altercation with flight attendants aboard an Ibom Air flight traveling from Uyo to Lagos, as well as engaging in a confrontation with airport security personnel. According to Ibom Air, the incident originated prior to takeoff in Uyo when Emmanson reportedly refused to comply with standard aviation safety protocols, specifically the requirement to switch off her mobile phone. The airline stated that her actions posed a significant risk to the safety of the flight crew, fellow passengers, and the aircraft itself. As a result, Ibom Air imposed a permanent travel ban on Emmanson, prohibiting her from boarding any of its flights in the future.

The civil society group sharply criticized the Airline Operators of Nigeria for endorsing a lifetime ban on Emmanson without conducting a proper investigation or granting her an opportunity to present her side of the story. Akingunola expressed concern over what he described as a rushed and biased judgment, arguing that such a severe penalty should not be imposed without due process.

Akingunola further criticized the police for their swift move to pursue legal action against Emmanson without undertaking a thorough and unbiased fact-finding process. He pointed out that the publicly available video footage, which primarily captures events outside the aircraft, is incomplete and fails to provide a full picture of the incident. He insisted that Ibom Air must release the in-flight video recordings to shed light on whether Emmanson’s behavior was provoked by specific actions or circumstances onboard. “Relying solely on the footage recorded outside the aircraft to judge this incident is fundamentally flawed,” Akingunola stated. “It is evident that the altercation began inside the plane, and it appears Emmanson’s reaction was triggered after she was prevented from disembarking, suggesting a possible orchestrated effort to penalize her for whatever transpired during the flight.”

Akingunola raised critical questions about the sequence of events, particularly how a passenger who was reportedly willing to leave the aircraft could suddenly refuse to do so moments later. He argued that it is unreasonable to expect someone who was forcibly removed from a plane to remain calm and composed under such circumstances. Furthermore, he suggested that the situation may have been deliberately escalated to fit a predetermined narrative, designed to justify punitive measures against Emmanson. Akingunola emphasized that cabin crew members should not assume the role of law enforcement officers, especially when their actions contribute to physical confrontations or assaults. He called for greater accountability and transparency from both Ibom Air and the regulatory bodies involved to ensure that justice is served and that Emmanson’s rights are protected.
