“Stable Families Now in Poverty” – Obi Speaks On Economic Hardship

Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has attributed Nigeria’s widespread poverty, hunger, and economic struggles to what he calls “incompetent leadership.” In a statement posted on his X page on Monday, the former governor of Anambra State drew a sharp contrast between Nigeria’s economic trajectory and that of Argentina, which he cited as an example of a nation that turned its economy around with committed leadership.

Obi highlighted dire statistics to illustrate Nigeria’s economic challenges. He noted that the United Nations recently reported that 34 million Nigerians are facing acute food insecurity, and about 63% of the population, which is 133 million people, live in multidimensional poverty. He also pointed out that despite “suppressed statistics,” inflation is nearing 30%, and a once-thriving middle class has been nearly eliminated by unemployment and economic mismanagement.

According to Obi, this situation isn’t an accident but a direct result of leaders who lack the capacity and compassion to prioritise the well-being of the Nigerian people. To illustrate what is possible with focused leadership, Obi referenced Argentina, whose current administration came into office in the same year as Nigeria’s.

He pointed out that in early 2024, Argentina faced an even more severe crisis, with over 52% of its population in poverty and inflation exceeding 200%.

However, Obi said that within two years, through “decisive action to cut waste in governance and prioritise economic stability,” the poverty rate was reportedly reduced to 38.1% and extreme poverty to 8.2%.

According to him, monthly inflation also dropped to 2-3%. Obi added that by 2025, urban poverty declined even further to 31.6%, a change that he said has brought tangible improvements to people’s daily lives and boosted investor confidence.

Obi argued that Nigeria could achieve a similar transformation, but only if its leaders are honest, focused, and dedicated to the people. He called for a government that would manage resources prudently, reject corrupt practices, and focus on critical sectors like education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.
