Nigeria Pledges Support for First UN Global Advocate for Peace

The Nigerian government has pledged full support to Maryam Bukar Hassan, a Nigerian spoken-word artist and peace advocate, in her new role as the first-ever United Nations Global Advocate for Peace.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Vice President Kashim Shettima described the appointment as well-deserved.

He praised Hassan for her consistent peace advocacy, particularly referencing her viral video, “Violence has no Religion.”

Shettima assured Hassan that the President Bola Tinubu administration, which he described as “pro-youth,” would provide unwavering support for her cause.

“We are in this together, and whatever support you need, we’ll give you,” he stated.

He emphasised that the government is focused on promoting peace and unity to help the nation achieve its potential.

Shettima also noted that he was inspired by Hassan’s decision to align her advocacy with the challenges in her home state of Borno.

Hassan, who led a delegation to the Vice President’s office, said her primary duty is to bring the message of peace to the world.

However, she emphasised that she would begin her advocacy in Nigeria, her home country, which faces various security challenges.

She called for collaboration with the federal government to create a supportive environment for her group’s peace projects.

According to a member of her team, Hassan’s role over the next two years will involve building a coalition of young voices and working with creative individuals globally to share information on peace-building initiatives.
