NPFL Player Faced Sanctions Over Betting Allegations

‎‎A player, whose identity remains undisclosed, has had his registration for the upcoming season suspended due to suspicions of involvement in illegal betting activities.

‎Sources from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) have refrained from naming the player but confirmed that a letter has been dispatched to both him and his club.

‎It has been further revealed that the player’s troubles began when his club terminated his contract based on allegations of participation in betting.

‎During the last Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Abuja, the topic of player betting was thoroughly discussed, leading to a resolution aimed at intensifying efforts to combat this practice.

‎Another source from the league office disclosed that the player’s case was brought to attention when a club from the Southwest informed the board about the player’s refusal to complete the contract form, which includes a clause prohibiting players from engaging in betting. This clause stipulates immediate contract termination.

‎”This is part of a renewed commitment to crack down on suspected betting syndicates that are allegedly collaborating with certain players and club officials within the NPFL,” the source confirmed.

‎It has been learned that the suspension is intended to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of his involvement in betting while he was playing for a club in the North Central region.

‎”We have made representations to the appropriate security agencies and have received assurances that they will utilize forensic intelligence tools,” an NPFL official stated.
