Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie has reiterated her strong support for presidential hopeful Peter Obi. The 47-year-old asserted that Obi’s desire to lead Nigeria is driven by a genuine concern for the country, not personal ambition or ego.
In an interview on Channels Television’s “Amazing Africans,” the author of “Purple Hibiscus” distinguished the former governor of Anambra State from other politicians, whom she described as being “desperate to become president” for the sake of their egos. “He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria, but he doesn’t need to be,” Adichie said.
She highlighted what she sees as a crucial difference in his motivation. The mother of three explained that her support for the 64-year-old is rooted in her patriotism and a conviction that the right leadership can improve the country’s condition. The award-winning writer praised Obi’s values, describing him as a humble and accountable leader.
“Peter Obi is not a person who expects you to thank him for doing his job as a leader, because to him it’s his job,” she said. Adichie added that Obi’s sense of accountability to the people is a distinguishing trait, as he does not believe in “lording it over people.” Adichie, who has known Obi for many years, noted that he has remained consistent in his values.
“The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same,” she said, highlighting his genuineness, consistency, and curiosity as essential qualities for a leader. The author was a prominent supporter of Obi during the 2023 presidential election, a role that included social media endorsements, a birthday tribute, and an open letter to then-U.S. President Joe Biden criticising the election’s credibility.
Adichie was also present at the Presidential Election Tribunal in Abuja to show her support for the Labour Party candidate. Obi has since announced his intention to run for President again in the 2027 election.
