“I Forgave Him Before We Ever Spoke” — Clarence Peters Opens Up About His Father, Shina Peters

Clarence Peters

In a rare and deeply personal revelation, celebrated Nigerian music video director Clarence Peters has spoken candidly about his relationship with his father, Afro-Juju legend Sir Shina Peters, and the emotional journey that led him to forgiveness.

During a heartfelt interview on the Afropolitan Podcast, Clarence shared that he forgave his father long before they ever had a conversation about their strained relationship. The turning point came in 2014/2015, when Clarence recognized that he had made many of the same mistakes his father did.

“I made every single mistake my father made. I’m just lucky that time and tech saved me from it being as catastrophic as his own. So, the moment I realised that I forgave him instantly even before we had a conversation. That was when I became an adult. That was when I began my journey into adulthood. I’m still on the journey. You’re always on the journey,“ he said.

Clarence, known for directing some of the most iconic music videos in Nigeria, described this realization as the beginning of his adulthood, a moment of clarity that allowed him to release resentment and embrace empathy.

The 41-year-old director also reflected on his efforts to avoid repeating his father’s behavior toward women, admitting, “I tried not to be like my father with women… but I’m not perfect.”

Clarence’s openness has sparked conversations about generational healing, personal growth, and the power of forgiveness in navigating complex family dynamics.
