Abuse of U.S. Visa Could Lead to Deportation, NOA Tells Nigerians

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a strong cautionary statement to Nigerians travelling abroad, particularly to the United States, urging them to use their visas responsibly.

The agency warned that a failure to do so could lead to severe consequences for individuals and potentially for other Nigerian travellers.

In a statement, the agency’s Director of Communications and Media, Bala Musa said NOA Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu advised Nigerians to adhere to the purpose and classification of their travel documents

He stressed that U.S. authorities do not stop their security vetting at the point of entry but continue to monitor visa holders after they have arrived.

According to Issa-Onilu, violating U.S. immigration rules or any American law could result in a visa being revoked and the individual being deported.

He highlighted that overstaying a visa or breaking its conditions could lead to a lifetime ban from the U.S. and negatively impact the chances of other Nigerians with legitimate reasons for travel.

Issa-Onilu also reminded travellers to declare any cash exceeding permitted limits and to avoid carrying contraband.

He advised Nigerian students in the U.S. to ensure they regularise their visa status before it expires.

Issa-Onilu further noted that individuals seeking tourist visas to give birth in the U.S. for citizenship purposes would likely have their applications denied.

He reiterated that the United States employs a rigorous screening process to safeguard its security while maintaining a fair and transparent visa process for lawful travel.
