Dino Melaye Follows Atiku’s Footsteps, Quits PDP

Senator Dino Melaye, a former representative for Kogi West, has officially severed his ties with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He expressed a lack of faith in the party’s ability to address Nigeria’s pressing political issues as the reason for his defection in a statement posted on his social media platforms on Thursday.

In the resignation letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Port City News, he directed it to the PDP chairman of his ward in Aiyetoro Gbede, Kogi State.

Melaye later posted a video on his X handle where he was receiving a membership card for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party adopted by the coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

In the resignation letter, he explained that his decision was a direct result of the PDP’s perceived “lack of potency and capacity” to rescue Nigerians from what he described as a deeply ingrained political crisis.

The former governor stated that after a period of careful consideration regarding the party’s current state, he could no longer, in good conscience, remain a member or support its objectives.

“Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” the letter read.

He also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served while he was a member.

Melaye’s exit is the latest in a series of political shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His move follows a similar decision by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who also recently left the PDP.

Atiku, in a letter, informed the PDP Chairman of his Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State of his departure, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

Atiku’s letter explained that the party had veered from its core founding principles, making his exit necessary.

Also, Dele Momodu defected from the party after Atiku left.
