RISEC Announces New Date for Rivers LG Polls

RISEC

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced a new date for the local government elections, pushing the exercise back to Saturday, August 30th.

This adjustment moves the polls from their initial scheduled date of August 9th.

RSIEC Chairman, Michael Odey, revealed the revised timetable and guidelines during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Monday at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

The gathering included leaders of political parties, electoral observers, and members of the press, who were present to review the updated arrangements for the upcoming council elections.

Odey explained that the decision to postpone the election was a direct consequence of the state of emergency previously declared in Rivers, which had disrupted the original electoral blueprint.

He emphasized that these new circumstances made it essential to modify the electoral calendar.

The updated schedule includes fresh dates for crucial stages of the electoral process. Political parties intending to participate are now expected to conduct their primaries between July 31st and August 3rd.

Following this, the submission of their nominated candidates will take place on August 3rd and August 4th, 2025.

The official period for electioneering activities is set to commence on Tuesday, August 12th, while the recruitment of ad-hoc staff to assist with the elections will occur on Saturday, August 16th.

The list of all approved candidates will be publicly displayed on Wednesday, August 20th.
