Wike Highlights Contributions to UNIPORT, RSU, Judiciary During 35th Combined Institution Convocation

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday, recounted his support for the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State University (RSU), and the legal sector during UNIPORT’s 35th combined convocation and 50th anniversary.

Wike, an alumnus of UNIPORT, said the institution provided the academic foundation for his career and deserved continued support from its graduates.

“I have done so, not out of convenience but as a deliberate pursuit of commitment to gratitude for a university that gave me so much,” he said.

He revealed that as Minister of State for Education, he established the university’s Faculty of Law and funded its building, alongside that of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

He also facilitated a N500 million grant from TETFund for development projects.

As Rivers’ governor, he responded to UNIPORT’s request for a convocation arena and completed infrastructure projects for several faculties, the Senate building, student hostels, and clinical training centres. At RSU, where he studied law, he built a postgraduate hostel while serving as Obio/Akpor council chairman.

On his contributions to the judiciary, Wike said he established the NBA Rivers branch, ensured housing for retired judges, and provided vehicles to aid their work. He also built the Body of Benchers complex in Abuja and sponsored facilities at Law School campuses in Yenagoa and Port Harcourt.

Now as FCT Minister, he is constructing an annexe for the Body of Benchers, new Court of Appeal buildings, and housing for judges of various courts.

Wike encouraged other alumni and public figures to emulate his example in supporting institutions that shaped their lives.

  1. Great contribution from the FCT Minister, we look forward to more contribution not only from sectors that had contributed to our growth.
