Rivers Govt Establishes Farmer-Herder Peace Committee to Curb Conflicts

The Rivers State Government has launched a new committee dedicated to resolving persistent conflicts between farmers and herders throughout the state.

This initiative aims to foster peaceful coexistence and prevent violence that has plagued agricultural communities.

During the committee’s inauguration in Port Harcourt, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ibibia Worika, emphasised agriculture’s vital role in Nigeria’s economy.

However, he noted that internal sector conflicts, particularly those involving farmers and herders, have led to tragic loss of life, displacement, and economic disruption.

Worika, who also chairs the newly formed committee, underscored the Rivers State Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas’s, commitment to proactive measures.

Worika said the administrator is determined to prevent such incidents by promoting dialogue, upholding justice, and guaranteeing a tranquil environment.

“This farmers and herders committee has therefore been constituted as a proactive measure to among others identify and address early warning signs of tension between farmers and herders across the state,” Worika stated.

He added that the committee’s mandate includes mediating disputes amicably through community-based, non-violent approaches, and ensuring that grazing and farming activities adhere to legal and environmental sustainability standards.

The committee will also be responsible for advising the government on long-term strategies for land use, pasture development, and water resource management.

Additionally, it will work to foster mutual understanding and peaceful engagement through community sensitisation and advocacy programs.

The SSG highlighted the diverse composition of the committee, which reflects the government’s inclusive, inter-sectoral approach.

Its members are drawn from traditional institutions, security agencies, farmers’ associations, herders’ representatives, civil society groups, and relevant government ministries, including agriculture, local government, and justice.

Worika stressed that the committee is expected to operate with wisdom, impartiality, and diligence.
“Our task is not only to prevent conflict but to build trust and forge partnerships between the various communities that sustain our economy and our peace,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture will serve as the committee’s Secretary.
