Relief International Africa Condemns Governor Okpebholo’s Remarks Against Peter Obi

Relief International Africa has issued a strong condemnation of the recent comments made by the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Monday Okpebholo, in which he reportedly declared that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is not welcome in Edo State and that his security could not be guaranteed if he visits.

Reacting to the issue, the Executive Director, Ambassador Green Isaac, described the governor’s remarks as irresponsible, dangerous, and unbecoming of a sitting governor.

“As an organisation committed to human rights, good governance, and the promotion of peace and democratic principles in Nigeria, we find such comments highly disturbing.

“Governor Okpebholo, as the Chief Security Officer of his state, is constitutionally obligated to guarantee the safety and freedom of movement of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.”

The group warned that such statements are capable of inciting unrest, fueling political intolerance, and undermining national unity. It further described the governor’s comments as a direct violation of democratic principles, particularly the rights to free expression, association, and movement guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.

Relief International Africa called on Governor Okpebholo to immediately retract his statement and issue a public apology to Obi and the Nigerian public.

“Leaders must be held to higher standards of civility, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law. Political disagreements must never be allowed to degenerate into threats or intimidation,” the organisation stated.

The organisation also urged security agencies, civil society groups, and the general public to remain vigilant and defend the country’s democratic space against any form of political repression.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us. No citizen should be told they are not welcome in any part of their country,” the group emphasised.
