The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of a university student following a suspected cult-related attack in Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, as tensions rise amid ongoing clashes between rival cult groups.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, 20th July 2025, around 11:30 a.m., claimed the life of Julius Okpor, a 300-level student of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. Okpor, who hailed from Okposi in Ogba/Egbema Local Government Area (LGA), was allegedly shot by suspected members of a rival cult along Cecilia Road in the Rumuolumeni axis of the state capital.

According to a police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, noted that officers from the Rumuolumeni Division responded swiftly to a distress call and rushed the victim to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), where he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the killing may be connected to an ongoing feud between cult groups operating in the area.

In response, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police (CP) Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full-scale investigation and manhunt for those responsible.

He gave assurance that the Command is intensifying efforts to dismantle cult networks and restore calm across affected communities.
