Solar-Powered Internet Launched at Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic

…MAJI partners with stakeholders to boost digital access in Rivers State

In a major step toward bridging Nigeria’s digital divide, the Media Awareness and Justice Initiative (MAJI) has commissioned a solar-powered internet facility at the Kenule Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The initiative aims to enhance digital skills and broaden online access for students.

The project, executed in partnership with the management of Kenule Polytechnic and with support from the Internet Society, World Association for Christian Communication (WACC), and the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), delivers free internet access powered by renewable energy.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Okoro Onyekachi, Executive Director of MAJI, explained that the project is part of the organization’s community-centered connectivity initiative aimed at empowering young people through affordable digital access.

“Only 45% of Nigerians currently have access to digital services. This is far below the government’s target of 90% digital penetration by 2030. Our goal is to support rural and low-income urban communities, providing free or low-cost internet to unlock opportunities in education, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy.”

He emphasized that the project goes beyond infrastructure provision. MAJI will also conduct assessments, training, and capacity-building sessions focused on digital marketing and other relevant tech skills, tailored to students’ interests.

“We don’t just want to provide internet access. We want to equip young people with the skills to use it productively. We believe this will help build a better Nigeria.”

Representing the Polytechnic’s Rector, Dr. Suanu Gwara, at the event, Dr. Michael Saro, Dean of Student Affairs, expressed appreciation to MAJI and its partners.

“This is a laudable initiative. On behalf of the Polytechnic’s management, we thank MAJI for thinking about our students and the Bori community. I encourage our students to make good use of this opportunity and avoid abusing the facility.”

Also speaking, Comrade Akor Kinsley, President of the Kenule Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic Student Union Government (SUG), described the initiative as a long-awaited blessing.

“We’ve prayed and worked towards this day. This internet facility will be especially helpful to our students in research and assignments, particularly for departments like Computer Science that rely heavily on internet access.

“It will also reduce the cost of data, easing the burden on students and their parents.”

The initiative is expected to serve as a model for expanding digital access to underserved institutions and communities, promoting equitable participation in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
