Residents in Rivers Communities Seek NDDC, Govt Intervention Over Dilapidated Road

Rivers State

Calling on immediate intervention to avert casualties and delays in vehicular movement, residents of Okporo and Umuchiolu communities in Aluu, Ikwerre Loval Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State, are appealing to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to intervene in fixing their severely deteriorated roads.

Mr. Walter Enefa, a resident, recalled that a contractor briefly appeared on-site during the last administration when the NDDC initiated a probe into abandoned projects, but work stopped abruptly.

“We are begging the government to come and help us, to see us through this road. There is no way for a motor, or a cyclist, or a keke,” Enefa said.

Community members, including Mrs. Joy Amuzie and Mrs. Peace Chidubem, shared their frustrations, saying the poor state of the road and drainage causes frequent falls, especially during rainfall.

“When I will be coming back, I will fall. My children will fall. If rain fall like this, you cannot move anywhere,” Amuzie lamented.

The appeal comes as the NDDC, marking its 25th anniversary, reiterated its commitment to completing abandoned projects. Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the commission’s MD/CEO, recently emphasized the need to revisit and complete such initiatives to ensure public funds are not wasted.

The communities are also requesting that the NDDC’s light-up initiative be extended to areas still lacking electricity supply.
