Rivers-Born Dr Reason Onya Makes History in Russia with Gold Medal at Sechenov University

In a historic academic milestone, 22-year-old Dr. Reason Ebubechukwu Onya has become the first Nigerian of Rivers State origin to graduate with a Gold Diploma and Gold Medal from the prestigious I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Russia’s oldest and most esteemed medical institution.

Dr. Onya, a native of the Ekpeye Kingdom in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, hails from the illustrious Izuorgwu Ellah the Great family of the Edhiwulu kindred, Ubio community. His stellar academic journey was marked by an unbroken record of excellence, graduating with straight A’s and earning the title of Valedictorian, the university’s highest academic honour.

His achievement has not only brought pride to Nigeria but has also drawn attention across global academic and cultural circles as a testament to the boundless potential of African students on the world stage.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Onya attributed his success to discipline, perseverance, and unwavering dedication.

“I learned how to wake up early, attend my classes with full commitment, and always give my best. Thank you so much for all you have taught me,” he said during his valedictory speech.

“We faced numerous challenges. We came from different parts of the world, but today we are united in one goal to serve as doctors and medical professionals, to provide care to those in need, and uplift communities globally.

“To my dear colleagues, let this not be the peak of our achievements, but a springboard for a lifetime of impact. To young boys and girls in Nigeria, Egypt, Russia, and across the globe: wherever you may be watching this, know that nothing is above you. You are the best.”

Dr. Reason Onya’s feat stands as a beacon of inspiration for Nigerian youths and a proud moment for Rivers State, showcasing what is possible through dedication and hard work.
