WAFCON 2024: CAF Lists Super Falcons’ Abiodun Among Five Rising Stars

The Confederation of African Football, known as CAF, has recognised Super Falcons’ Deborah Abiodun as one of the five emerging talents to observe during the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The dedicated midfielder was included in Nigeria’s roster for the biennial tournament by head coach Justine Madugu two weeks prior.

Abiodun is set to make her debut appearance at WAFCON in Morocco.

The 21-year-old gained attention following her outstanding performance for the nine-time African champions at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.

The former Rivers Angels player is anticipated to play a significant role for the Super Falcons, who are aiming for their 10th title in Morocco.

Abiodun has participated in seven matches for the Super Falcons.

Other players mentioned include Tunisia’s Salma Marzouki, Ruth Bulala Nossa from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia’s Salma Marzouki, and Comfort Yeboah from Ghana.

The Super Falcons hold the record as the most successful team in the tournament, having won nine titles. Nevertheless, the last time Nigeria secured the championship was in 2018 in Ghana.

Nigeria experienced a disappointing fourth-place finish at the 2022 WAFCON, following defeats to Morocco in the semi-finals and Zambia in the match for third place.

The Falcons are determined to clinch the title for the 10th time in the forthcoming edition, scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26.
