Landlord in Etche LGA Detains Ex-Tenant’s Wife Over Unpaid N400,000 Debt

The conflict stems from an unpaid debt of N400,000, which the landlord reportedly loaned to his former tenant. The tenant admitted to borrowing the money but was unable to repay it.

Facing financial difficulties, he chose to move out of the rented property quietly in 2023, presumably to avoid further confrontation over the debt.

Since the tenant’s departure, the landlord had allegedly been searching for him to recover the debt. Over the weekend, the landlord reportedly tracked down the tenant’s wife to a meeting in Igwuruta (a community in Ikwerre LGA, near Port Harcourt) and took her to his residence.

The Landlord detained her for three days, with the landlord and his wife allegedly keeping her in custody.
The landlord is said to be insisting on partial repayment of at least N200,000 (half of the debt).

A written agreement from the tenant guaranteeing payment of the remaining balance. Only upon meeting these conditions would the woman be released.

Kidnapping and illegal detention are criminal offences under Nigerian law, regardless of debt disputes. The landlord’s actions could constitute self-help justice, which is unlawful. Creditors are expected to seek redress through legal channels (e.g., small claims court) rather than taking matters into their own hands.

The police and local authorities have not yet responded to the incident, raising concerns about delayed intervention. If true, the landlord’s actions could land him in serious legal trouble, even if his grievance over the unpaid debt is legitimate.

If authorities eventually respond, the situation could escalate legally, or a settlement might be reached privately. For now, the detained woman’s safety remains a pressing concern.
