Nigerian Army Conducts Sanitation Exercise in Rivers Ahead of 162nd Army Day Celebration

As part of activities marking the 162nd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2025, the 6 Division Headquarters of the Nigerian Army has embarked on a sanitation exercise in Rivers State.

The exercise, held Saturday in Umuakpa Community and Elele along the Igwuruta-Etche Road in Ikwerre Local Government Area, saw troops clearing refuse and engaging residents in a coordinated clean-up operation.

Brigadier General Emmanuel Adamu, Chief of Staff of the Division, led the exercise on behalf of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah. Speaking at the event, he explained that the exercise was not only part of the Army Day build-up but also a gesture aimed at strengthening civil-military relations.

He noted that the annual celebration—observed every July 6—commemorates the sacrifices and contributions of the Nigerian Army to national unity, security, and peace.

“This sanitation exercise is one of the many activities lined up to commemorate the Nigerian Army Day. It helps raise awareness and reinforces our ongoing efforts to build stronger ties with our host communities,” Adamu said.

He reiterated the Army’s commitment to fostering community partnerships and maintaining a healthy environment in areas where military formations are located.

Also speaking during the event, Lt. Col. Isaac Gbenga Fashona, Commanding Officer of the 5 Battalion and Cantonment, Elele, emphasized the Army’s appreciation for its host communities. He described the sanitation as a symbolic gesture of unity and gratitude.

“We came out en masse today to give back to our host community through this sanitation exercise. It’s our way of showing appreciation for the peaceful and welcoming environment they provide,” Fashona said.

The Nigerian Army Day celebration provides a moment for reflection on the military’s legacy, honouring fallen heroes while reaffirming its ongoing commitment to national defense and peacekeeping efforts both at home and abroad.
